Can you Uber from Cancun to Tulum?
- Safety: There have been instances of Uber drivers getting attacked by local taxi drivers who are against the arrival of Uber. In fact, even those who were not Uber drivers have been attacked.
- Availability: While Uber operates in Cancun, its availability may vary, and you may find fewer drivers or longer wait times for a ride heading to Tulum, especially if you are at the Cancun Airport.
- Cost: While Uber in Cancun is not expensive per mile, the total cost of a ride to Tulum can add up due to the distance. From Cancun International Airport to Tulum is 74 miles (120 kilometers). And from Cancun city center to Tulum is even 81 miles (131 kilometers). So make sure you check the estimated fare on the Uber app before requesting a ride.
Can you Uber from Playa Del Carmen to Tulum?
No, there’s no Uber service in Playa Del Carmen either. This means that you won’t be able to request an Uber ridesharing service from Playa Del Carmen to Tulum.
Alternatives: Getting to Tulum without Uber

- Taxis: You can easily find taxis in Playa del Carmen, Cancun, and Tulum. Make sure to agree on the fare with the driver before starting your journey. Expect to pay around $180 (3000 pesos) from Cancun and ~$80 (1400 pesos) from Playa Del Carmen to Tulum. Note that taxis in Tulum are generally more expensive than in Cancun and Playa del Carmen, so you might have to pay more on the way back.
- Private shuttle: Private transfers are a convenient and luxurious way to get around, offering personalized and stress-free travel. The cost of a private shuttle depends on the size and type of car but is generally cheaper than a taxi.
- Colectivos: Colectivos are shared vans that operate along popular routes in the Riviera Maya. They are a budget-friendly option and can be found at designated pickup points.
- ADO Bus: The ADO bus is another budget-friendly option, providing comfortable transportation between Cancun and Tulum, crossing through Playa del Carmen. Check the bus schedule in advance for departure times. The ADO Bus Terminal in Tulum will be your bus stop.
- Renting a car: If you prefer flexibility and independence, you can rent a car for the journey. There are many options available in both Cancun (also at the airport) and Playa Del Carmen.

- Taxis: Taxis are readily available in Tulum. You can easily flag one down or find them at designated taxi stands. Be sure to agree on the fare with the driver before starting your journey, as taxis in Tulum do not use meters and are known for trying to squeeze the most they can out of tourists.
- Private Driver: Hiring a private driver in Tulum is a convenient and secure alternative to taxis. With a private driver, you avoid the hassle of finding a taxi, negotiating fares, and potential overcharges, ensuring a positive experience. This option also adds a layer of safety and reliability, as you’ll have a trusted driver familiar with the area.
- Bicycles: Tulum is known for its bicycle-friendly environment. Many hotels and rental shops offer bicycles for exploring the town and nearby attractions. It’s a great way to enjoy the relaxed pace of Tulum. You can also rent electric bikes in Tulum.
- Walking: Tulum’s town center and beach areas are pedestrian-friendly. You can walk to many restaurants, shops, and beachfront destinations. Just be prepared for warm and sunny weather, especially during the day. Walking is not a realistic way to travel anywhere within Tulum. Especially the beach and downtown are quite far apart.
