Sian Ka’an is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve just south of Tulum – 5,200 km² of mangroves, lagoons, reef, and jungle that sees a fraction of the tourists the ruins do. One of the best places in the Riviera Maya to spot dolphins, manatees, crocodiles, sea turtles, and hundreds of bird species in the wild.
Two options: a half-day tour through the lagoons and mangroves, stopping at Boca Paila for wildlife and snorkeling the barrier reef from a sandbank; or a full-day tour that goes deeper into the reserve, reaching Punta Allen – a remote fishing village at the tip of the peninsula – for lunch.
Half Day Tour to Sian Kaan
Six hours through one of Mexico’s most pristine reserves. Your guide takes you by boat through mangrove channels and lagoons, stopping at Boca Paila – the point where freshwater lagoon meets the Caribbean Sea. Spot crocodiles in the mangroves, watch for birds and manatees, and, weather permitting, snorkel a section of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef from a nearby sandbank. After the water, enjoy a homemade lunch on the beach before heading back.

Full Day Tour to Sian Kaan
The full experience. Everything in the half-day tour, but you continue deeper into the reserve – past Boca Paila, through the lagoon system, and all the way to Punta Allen at the tip of the peninsula. Accompanied by local fishermen who know these waters, you’ll have more time for wildlife spotting (dolphins are more common in the deeper waters near Punta Allen), swim at a sheltered sandbank locals call “Nature’s Swimming Pool,” and eat a local lunch in the village before the scenic drive back.

Frequently Asked Questions
How far in advance should you book the Sian Kaan tours?
We recommend booking your tours at least one week in advance. However, we can sometimes accommodate last-minute bookings.
Which Sian Kaan tour should you choose?
The half day gives you a solid taste of Sian Ka’an – mangroves, wildlife, reef snorkeling, and a beach lunch – and you’re back by early afternoon. The full day goes deeper into the reserve, reaches Punta Allen (a remote fishing village you can’t easily get to otherwise), and gives you more time for dolphins and the sandbank swimming pool. If you have the time, the full day is worth it.
Will you definitely see dolphins/manatees?
Wildlife sightings are never guaranteed, but Sian Ka’an is one of the best places in Mexico for it. Dolphins are most commonly seen on the full-day tour near Punta Allen. Crocodiles and birds are seen on virtually every trip. Manatees are rarer but do appear, especially in the lagoon channels.
Is the snorkeling guaranteed?
Reef snorkeling is weather-dependent. If the sea is too rough, your guide will adjust with a sheltered cenote or lagoon swim instead. This doesn’t happen often, but it’s worth knowing in advance.
Do you need snorkeling experience?
No. The guides provide all equipment and a briefing. Both tours are suitable for beginners. You’ll be in calm, clear water with good visibility.
What should you bring?
Comfortable clothes, swimwear, biodegradable sunscreen (required), sunglasses, a towel, binoculars if you have them, a camera, and some cash. All snorkeling gear is provided.
Are the tours private or shared?
Both options are available. Private tours are fully customizable – adjust the itinerary, pace, and stops. Small-group tours follow a set route with other guests.
Are you picked up at your accommodation?
Yes. Every tour includes roundtrip air-conditioned transportation from your accommodation in Tulum and back.
Do the guides speak English?
Yes, all guides are fluent in English and Spanish.
Are entry fees included?
Yes – all entry fees, park admissions, and required permits are included in the price.
Is lunch included?
Yes, every tour includes lunch. Let us know about dietary restrictions or allergies when you book.
How can you pay?
Full payment via online payment link before the tour. Prefer to pay in Mexican pesos? Just let us know.
What is the minimum age?
The minimum age is 12 years. The boats are stable, the water is calm.
What is the cancellation policy?
Free cancellation up to 48 hours before the start of the tour. No questions asked.
