    What is a Colectivo Bus?

A colectivo is a unique mode of transportation exclusive to the Riviera Maya region, which is not too comfortable nor very safe but which is budget-friendly.

Fares vary depending on your destination, with rates typically determined by distance traveled. For instance, a journey from Tulum to Cancun may cost around 200 pesos roundtrip.

Stay tuned as we go deeper into the various destinations accessible via Colectivo buses, including popular spots like cenotes, and provide insights on where to catch these convenient modes of transport.

    How to Pay and Prices

Colectivos are an affordable way to get around, though prices may vary slightly depending on the route. While there’s no official price list, fares are generally inexpensive. Payment is cash only, so make sure to carry small bills and coins. When boarding, let the driver know your destination. You’ll typically pay when getting off, so keep your fare ready before reaching your stop.

Where to Catch a Colectivo in Tulum

Colectivos in Tulum can be boarded at various points along the main avenues. While there aren’t always clearly marked stops, locals are usually helpful in pointing you in the right direction. One notable pickup point is near the ADO bus station on Avenida Tulum. Additionally, for those heading to the beach, there’s a main stop at Parque Rotario, located three blocks away from the principal Tulum avenue on Orion South Street.

    Operating Hours

Colectivos generally operate from early morning until late evening. While exact times can vary, services typically start around 6:00 AM and run until approximately 10:00 PM. It’s advisable to plan your trips within these hours to ensure availability.

Speedy Journeys but a word of caution

Colectivos are a fast and cheap way to get to Tulum. However, a word to the wise: they might not be the safest option. There have been some reported accidents, so hold on to your sense of adventure.

    Colectivo Routes and Stops

The Colectivo route follows the highway until reaching Playa del Carmen. They won’t stop unless requested, so it’s essential to know your destination or ask the driver to alert you when nearing your stop.

We recommend visiting Buuts Ha Cenote Club, Xcacel Beach, Playa Coba, Bahia Principe, Akumal Beach, and Xpu Ha Beach. If your destination is on the left side of the highway, you can disembark and cross over. All listed destinations should cost no more than 50 pesos.

To clarify, you’ll need to walk from the highway to your destination as Colectivos only stop along the highway for pick-up and drop-off.

Colectivo to Tulum from Cancun Airport

Although direct colectivo service from Cancun Airport to Tulum isn’t offered, you can conveniently catch one from downtown Cancun known as Playa Express, located along Tulum Avenue in front of the ADO bus station. Upon reaching Playa del Carmen, simply cross the main avenue, head towards McDonald’s, and turn left to locate the colectivo station servicing various destinations, including Tulum.

Colectivo to Tulum from Playa del Carmen

Colectivos operate regularly between these two points for 50 pesos if you’re headed to Tulum. Seek them out between Chedraui Centro and McDonald’s on Av Juárez to locate the colectivo station.

    Colectivo to Tulum Beach

Dreaming of sinking your toes into the soft, white sands of Tulum Beach? Hop on a colectivo for 30 pesos in the corner of Parque Rotario, which is three blocks away from the principal Tulum avenue in Orion south street. This is the main colectivo stop for accessing the beach area. Once you get to the beach area you can easily walk on the hotel zone to find your favorite beach club, restaurant or boutique of interest.

    Colectivo to cenotes around Tulum

Seeking adventure? Tulum’s cenotes are a must-visit, you can just name the cenote to the driver and he will understand where your stop is (you should not expect them to be fluent in English).

Colectivos departing from the downtown stations can take you to various cenotes scattered across the region. The price may vary around 40 pesos depending on the distance traveled.

As mentioned before, you will have to name the cenote to the driver so that he lets you know when to drop off.

    Tips for Riding Colectivos

    • Be prepared: Colectivos operate on a first-come, first-served basis, so be prepared to wait during peak hours. Patience is key!
    • Cash is king: Colectivos don’t accept either debit or credit card so it’s always best to carry cash in Mexican pesos for your fare. Exact change is appreciated.
    • Respect the locals: Remember to respect the locals and fellow passengers. Keep noise levels down and refrain from eating or drinking inside the van.

With these tips and a sense of adventure, you’ll be conquering Tulum’s streets like a seasoned local in no time. So hop on board – the colectivos await!
