How to Get to Tulum: Every Option

Getting to Tulum is easier than it used to be. The town now has its own international airport, the highway from Cancun is smooth, and there are options for every budget and style, from a cheap bus to a private helicopter. The trick is knowing which one fits your trip, so here is the honest local breakdown.

We help guests arrive in Tulum every week, so we have seen what works and what causes stress. Below we compare the airports and walk through every way into town. When you would rather skip the planning entirely, a pre-booked door-to-door transfer lets the trip start relaxed.

Which Airport Should You Fly Into?

You have two realistic choices, and a couple of others worth knowing.

Tulum Airport (TQO): the new Felipe Carrillo Puerto International Airport opened in late 2023 and now has direct flights from across the United States and Canada and several Mexican cities. It sits roughly a 40-minute drive south of Tulum town, so it is by far the closest and usually the easiest option.

Cancun Airport (CUN): still the biggest hub in the region with the most flights, often at lower fares. The trade-off is the drive, about two hours up the highway to Tulum.

In short, fly into Tulum when the flights and price work, and into Cancun when it is cheaper or more convenient, then plan for the longer transfer.

The Quick Comparison

Fastest and easiest: fly into Tulum (TQO) and take a short transfer to your hotel.

Cheapest: fly into Cancun, then take the ADO bus down to Tulum.

Most comfortable: any airport, with a private shuttle waiting to take you straight to your door.

Most memorable: a helicopter from Cancun or a limousine, for a special arrival.
