Tulum’s charm extends far beyond its beautiful beaches. Lush jungles, fascinating Mayan ruins, and vibrant cenotes are all within reach. To unlock Tulum’s full potential, having your own wheels can be a game-changer. Here’s what you need to know about renting a car at Tulum Airport.

Tulum Airport Car Rental

Convenience of Renting at the Airport

Picking up your car right after you land saves you time and hassle. No waiting for taxis or figuring out public transportation after a long flight. Most major rental companies (like Avis and Hertz) have offices at Tulum Airport, offering a variety of vehicles to suit your needs and budget.

Things to Consider

  • Book in Advance: Tulum is a popular destination, especially during peak season. Booking your car rental online beforehand ensures you get the car you want and avoids potential delays upon arrival.
  • Compare Rates and Insurance: Prices can vary between companies. Factor in the cost of insurance when comparing rates. In our experience websites often advertise low rates and then when you arrive, you have to buy an expensive and mandatory insurance. Consider calling the rental company to get real rates.
  • Think About Your Needs: A compact car is fine for navigating Tulum’s town center, residential area Aldea Zama or even most of the hotel zone, while a sturdier SUV is better suited for exploring off-the-beaten-path cenotes and ruins (or even areas with less paved roads like La Veleta or Region 15).

Beyond the Airport

If you’re on a tight budget or prefer to wait until you’re settled in Tulum, you can also rent a car in Tulum.

Alternatives option to get to Tulum from the airport

  • Private airport shuttles: Pre-arrange your pick-up for a comfortable journey directly to your Tulum accommodation. A good airport shuttle provider will ask your flight number so they can make sure they arrive on time. It also ensures they know where to go and you get a fair price without having to haggle in Spanglish.
  • Taxis: Taxis offer a direct route to your hotel, making them a potentially convenient choice, although it can be slightly annoying having to deal with sometimes pushy taxi drivers that seldom speak much English.
  • Public buses (by ADO) are also available on this route. They cost around 10 dollar (175 pesos) and you can buy your tickets on ADO website. For some reason their website is often offline though.

Final tip

Familiarize yourself with traffic rules and road signs in Mexico before hitting the road. Most signs are intuitive, and driving in Tulum is generally relaxed. However, defensive driving is always recommended, especially on highways.

Please be aware that there are no designated bike lanes on most Tulum streets, so always watch out for cyclists and share the road with care.

With a little planning, renting a car at Tulum Airport can be a smooth and convenient way to experience everything this incredible destination has to offer.
