Jet Ski near Tulum: Where to Ride
The turquoise Caribbean off Tulum looks made for a jet ski, and it is, with one catch the brochures skip: jet ski rentals are not available in Tulum itself due to local regulations protecting the beaches and reef. The good news is that the nearest rides are a short trip up the coast.

Head north. The closest jet ski operations run from Akumal, about 25 minutes away, where Princara Water Sports rents machines for rides along the bay and coastline, and from Playa del Carmen, roughly 55 minutes north, where beachfront operators offer jet skis alongside parasailing and banana boats. Sessions are typically sold in half-hour blocks and life jackets are mandatory.
A practical note: conditions matter more on a jet ski than on a boat. Morning rides get the calmest water, and operators cancel when the sea is rough, so build flexibility into the plan.

The sea builds chop with the afternoon wind, so an early session means smoother water, easier handling, and a drier, more comfortable ride.
The Boat Day Alternative
If the goal is speed, spray, and open water, the other option is a private boat charter, with one honest note up front: the bigger charter boats do not depart from Tulum either. They leave from the marina at Puerto Aventuras, about 40 minutes north, between Akumal and Playa del Carmen. What that extra stretch of driving buys is a much bigger day: cruising the coastline, stopping to swim and snorkel in coves and over reefs, drinks on board, and room for the whole group. For many visitors it ends up being the better version of the jet ski day, especially with more than two people.
Beyond the Throttle
The region’s other water adventures fill any remaining gaps: snorkeling the reef and the cenotes, paddling the lagoons, and full water-park days at Xel-Ha. Tulum may not rent jet skis, but nobody leaves short of time on the water.
