While exploring Tulum on a motorcycle can be an exciting experience, it’s essential to be aware of the safety considerations. Roads in Tulum, are generally less safe compared to some other countries. Potholes and uneven road surfaces are common. So pay close attention when you’re driving through Tulum. 

Additionally, it’s important to note that not all locals and tourists strictly adhere to local traffic regulations and customs. Be prepared for occasional rule-breaking and unpredictable behavior from others on the road.

Finally, beware of the speed bumps. Although these supposedly exist to increase safety they can be very tricky in Tulum. This is because they can be pretty steep while there is often no street lighting at all. More than once our car has been launched into the air because we completely didn’t see a speed bump at night. When driving a motorcycle this of course is even more dangerous. In fact, we know of someone who died on a motorcycle as a result of a speed bump on the Avenida Kukulkan (the road between La Veleta and the beach). So please be careful!

In conclusion: It can be quite dangerous to drive a motorcycle around Tulum. We prefer scooters because as long as you stay in Tulum, you never need the added horsepower of a motorcycle. It only increases the chances that you drive faster than you should. Having said that, scooters are not your safest option either.

The safest option is hiring a private driver. Followed by taking taxis or renting a car.

Before you decide to rent a motorcycle in Tulum, it’s essential to consider the pros and cons of this mode of transportation.

What about insurance costs?

Insurance is mandatory in Mexico, so don’t overlook this aspect.

For the cheaper model you pay 40 Mexican pesos per day, equivalent to US $2,30. 

For motorcycles in the higher price range, you pay more insurance, too. For example, for the 1,400 pesos motorcycle, you pay 200 pesos insurance per day, equivalent to US $11.
