Head north. The closest jet ski operations run from Akumal, about 25 minutes away, where Princara Water Sports rents machines for rides along the bay and coastline, and from Playa del Carmen, roughly 55 minutes north, where beachfront operators offer jet skis alongside parasailing and banana boats. Sessions are typically sold in half-hour blocks and life jackets are mandatory.

A practical note: conditions matter more on a jet ski than on a boat. Morning rides get the calmest water, and operators cancel when the sea is rough, so build flexibility into the plan.

What that extra stretch of driving buys is a much bigger day: cruising the coastline, stopping to swim and snorkel in coves and over reefs, drinks on board, and room for the whole group. For many visitors it ends up being the better version of the jet ski day, especially with more than two people.

The region’s other water adventures fill any remaining gaps: snorkeling the reef and the cenotes, paddling the lagoons, and full water-park days at Xel-Ha. Tulum may not rent jet skis, but nobody leaves short of time on the water.
