Is it safe to drive a motorcycle around Tulum?
Pros and cons of renting a motorcycle
While exploring Tulum on a motorcycle can be an exciting experience, it’s essential to be aware of the safety considerations. Roads in Tulum, are generally less safe compared to some other countries. Potholes and uneven road surfaces are common. So pay close attention when you’re driving through Tulum.
Additionally, it’s important to note that not all locals and tourists strictly adhere to local traffic regulations and customs. Be prepared for occasional rule-breaking and unpredictable behavior from others on the road.
Finally, beware of the speed bumps. Although these supposedly exist to increase safety they can be very tricky in Tulum. This is because they can be pretty steep while there is often no street lighting at all. More than once our car has been launched into the air because we completely didn’t see a speed bump at night. When driving a motorcycle this of course is even more dangerous. In fact, we know of someone who died on a motorcycle as a result of a speed bump on the Avenida Kukulkan (the road between La Veleta and the beach). So please be careful!
In conclusion: It can be quite dangerous to drive a motorcycle around Tulum. We prefer scooters because as long as you stay in Tulum, you never need the added horsepower of a motorcycle. It only increases the chances that you drive faster than you should. Having said that, scooters are not your safest option either.
The safest option is hiring a private driver. Followed by taking taxis or renting a car.
Before you decide to rent a motorcycle in Tulum, it’s essential to consider the pros and cons of this mode of transportation.
Here are the benefits:
- Freedom and flexibility: Riding a motorcycle allows you to navigate through Tulum’s traffic and find parking spots more easily in crowded areas.
- Connection to nature: You’ll feel more in touch with the natural surroundings of Tulum when you’re on a motorcycle in comparison to a car.
- Cost-effective: Motorcycles are generally more fuel-efficient than cars.
- Thrilling adventure: Although it can be unsafe, the thrill of riding a motorcycle enhances the overall experience of exploring Tulum.
And here are the drawbacks:
- Weather dependency: You may be more exposed to the elements, so be prepared for rain or intense sun.
- Limited storage: Motorcycles have limited storage space, so keep that in mind if you want to carry larger items or lots of luggage.
- Safety concerns: Motorcycles are riskier than cars, especially around Tulum. Always prioritize safety and wear appropriate gear.
Pricing of Tulum motorcycle rentals
The price for renting a motorcycle in Tulum typically ranges between 500 and 4,000 Mexican pesos per day, which translates to roughly US $28 to $230. The reason for this wide range is the kind of motorcycle you decide to hire.
The cheapest motorcycle is $26 (450 pesos) per day. The slightly more powerful version is $45 (790 pesos) per day. If you want the best performance, you pay $190 (3,300 pesos) per day.
What about insurance costs?
Insurance is mandatory in Mexico, so don’t overlook this aspect.
For the cheaper model you pay 40 Mexican pesos per day, equivalent to US $2,30.
For motorcycles in the higher price range, you pay more insurance, too. For example, for the 1,400 pesos motorcycle, you pay 200 pesos insurance per day, equivalent to US $11.
Alternatives to motorcycle rentals
If you’re still on the fence about renting a motorcycle, you can consider these alternative transportation options in Tulum:
- Scooter rental: Scooters offer a similar sense of freedom and are also more fuel-efficient than cars. Perfect for solo travelers or couples exploring the area.
- Car rental: Renting a car is a viable choice for families or those who prefer a more enclosed and weather-resistant option. It also provides more storage and comfort for longer journeys. That said, you might not need a car in Tulum.
- Bicycle rental: Rent a bicycle if you’re environmentally conscious and/or prefer a healthier option. Tulum’s flat terrain and dedicated bike paths make it a cyclist-friendly destination. You can also rent e-bikes in Tulum.
Validity of foreign driver’s licenses
Valid driver’s licenses from most countries are accepted in Mexico, including licenses from the UK, EU, Canada, and the US. However, if your license is not printed in English, you may be required to purchase an International Driving Permit (IDP) in addition to carrying your license. The IDP provides an official translation of your license and helps local authorities verify your credentials. It’s advisable to check with the motorcycle rental agency and local authorities to ensure you have the right documentation for driving in Tulum.
