Keep reading to learn everything you need to know about Tulum’s cycling paths.

Tulum's bike path network

There are some dedicated bike lanes in Tulum, but often you will find yourself riding on the side of a road, which in some roads is absolutely fine. There are also some roads where cycling is less comfortable and not the safest. Especially the Avenida Kukulkan (main road from La Veleta to the hotel zone) we recommend avoiding when biking, especially at night. It our experience it’s not safe and pretty uncomfortable (no street lighting, no bike path and people are driving fast).

Here are some of the main bike paths in Tulum:

  • Tulum beach bike path (Hotel Zone): You can ride along the main road in the hotel zone and many people though. The bike path is not continuous though. It is a bit random, with some stretches having a bike path, while in other parts you’re just cycling on the side of the road (see image below). Also good to realize that from the path/road most of the time you cannot see the ocean. Also keep in mind that during periods of heavy traffic in Tulum, biking may be a little less comfortable here – although much faster than traveling by car.
  • Downtown Tulum main road bike path: Immerse yourself in the heart of Tulum by riding along the bike path that runs parallel to the town’s main road. This route lets you experience the vibrant culture and atmosphere of downtown Tulum. Actually, technically this is not a bike path anymore since the local government in all its wisdom decide that people should use the main road for bicycling in this area. In our opinion this is dangerous and we advice against it. Most people still use the ‘bike path’ on the pavement when their cycling here.
  • Aldea Zama bike paths: Aldea Zama is quiet and beautiful neighborhood and as such offers a pretty good biking experience. Bike paths are infrequent and not clearly marked, but becuase there is not much traffic cycling here is still comfortable. There is also a new road through Aldea Zama to the hotel zone with a bike path. That can be a great bike ride, also because at the time of writing this road is still very quiet.
